Negative to Positive - the Swiss Cheese Effect

CARENIE LITTLE presents   "NEGATIVE TO POSITIVE  (THE SWISS CHEESE EFFECT)"  

 When:         Saturday March 28, 2026

Time:         9 am (to set up) - to 4:00 pm (clean up by 4:30 pm.)  

Cost:             $50.00 

Where:        Emmanuel United Church Hall, 395 Lakeshore Dr., North Bay

What:         This workshop explores negative space and how it defines and enhances the positive. With visuals, demos, and exercises, using black and white and then a limited palette, we will learn about this important concept. Colour theory and patterning will also be incorporated. To finish, we will use what we’ve learned to work on our own composition using our media of choice.

Essentials:    sketch pad, pencils, eraser, ruler, black Sharpie pen (the no-bleed kind if possible), coloured pencils in red, blue, yellow, grey, white.

Optionals:     pastels, acrylics, or watercolours and the paper, canvas, brushes, etc to go with. Reference photos (from books, magazines, or our  own) with interesting negative spaces, such as plants, people, landscapes, buildings.

Colin Davis Led Workshop

Description of the workshop:

Students will watch demos and learn about contemporary drawing techniques that explore abstraction/figuration and expressive mark-making.

SCHEDULE 

  • 9 am : Gather at Emmanuel church. 

  • 10 am  -12 noon Instruction. 

  • 12-1 lunch. Bring your own. Coffee and tea provided. 

  • 1-4pm  instruction with a break during the afternoon 

  • 4 pm Clean up. 

Cost $50

Preliminary Supply List 

Colin Davis will provide communal supplies as well:


  • 1 sheet of large drawing paper (~22"x30") charcoal/pastel paper is preferred, but any decent drawing paper or hot press paper will do
    Pad of charcoal paper or drawing paper. Strathmore 300 charcoal paper or equivalent is fine (nothing fancy needed)
    Translucent Vellum/tracing paper/mylar (~9"x12")
    Charcoal
    India Ink
    Brushes (for use with charcoal and India ink. Not precious sable brushes)
    Unconventional tools for mark-making (old toothbrush, bike chain, leaf, bubble wrap, etc.)
    Pencils
    Erasers including a kneadable eraser
    Spray bottle

    Bonus if you want:
    Drawing board with clips
    Gloves
    Mask
    Fixative or hairspray

First day for drop off Abstract art for Driven to Abstraction at Alex Dufresne Gallery in Callander. You may drop off up to three, at least one will be hung. Art may also be dropped off on Wednesday.
